Last week Donigan Painting completed an interior repaint and repair at one of Fayetteville's historic properties. The Palmer Homestead was built in 1815. It was restored two years ago by a company that specializes in property rehabs. Since it is very old many little problems have occurred since it was fixed and luckily I have been the company to repair these issues. A bunch of rooms walls have had water damage and needed to be repaired. The owner called me in months ago to start drying out sections on the walls in order to re-float them with joint compound and repaint them when they had completely dried out. So in many of the rooms sections of walls were removed, allowed to dry for a month, then repaired. Here is what it looked like.

Recently Donigan Painting completed an exterior repaint in Syracuse's Eastwood neighborhood on Shotwell Park. Jaime and Jared wanted to customize their new home to suit their taste. The tan color just was not doing it for them. After we met and did the walk around we discussed color options. They were leaning toward salmon colors for their choices. They choose three and to see if they liked them I applied samples on each side of the house before starting. After looking at them for a few weeks they chose light salmon. About a week or two before starting the painting their house was pressure washed to removed dirt and grime. Since it is aluminum siding there was not alot of prep work beyond some minor caulking-priming-cleaning. Once the house had dried enough one coat of Sherwin Williams Super Paint in Light Salmon was applied with a sprayer to most of the house. Accents around their home were matched to their deck color that included their doors, column tops and some molding. Two coats of Sherwin Williams solid deck stain were applied to their deck to wrap this one up.

Recently Donigan Painting completed an interior repaint in Syracuse's Sedgwick Neighborhood. Nicole and Ron bought a fixer upper that they have been chipping away at restoring. There's water damage from the previous owner in many of the rooms that has caused their plaster walls to buckle where most of the water settled. So they have had me back to fix things as they can. Over the last two years I have removed wall paper and painted many rooms in their home. So to start the damaged plaster was carefully removed with a grinder so all the lines were clean and tight. Since I was working inside I made sure to erect a vertical barrier to contain any dust from the wall repair. When finished the wall-ceiling-floor are thoroughly wiped down to remove dust.

Next a few coats of joint compound were applied until it was perfectly level with the existing wall. After vacuuming and wiping it down a coat of PPG's Seal Grip Primer was applied followed by two top coats of Sherwin-Williams Cashmere matched to the same medium gray. Next up is floating a guest bedroom ceiling to flat from settling cracks.

This week Donigan Painting completed an exterior repaint in Syracuse's Sedgwick Neighborhood. Megan's 1950's Cape was in need of some tlc. Her houses cedar clapboard needed a bunch of prep work to get it looking great again. So to start her house was pressure washed to remove dirt and dust build u. After it had dried out for a week we returned and began a week of prep work that included hand scraping peeling paint onto a contained area to be discarded safely after scraping. With older homes there is lead paint underneath the newer paint so taking EPA Certified precautions is the only way we do business. If you have children, grand children, pets, or neighbors with the same you want a certified EPA professional containing and discarding this heavy metal so it's not spread when being worked on. After the scraping was completed the wood was then spot primed with an oil based primer so that the top coat will stick best. Acrylic primers are good but oil is the best for certain situations. Next gaps, windows, doors were caulked with a 30 year silconized paintable caulk. Following this two coats of Sherwin-Williams Super Paint in flat bright white were applied with a sprayer, roller and brush. While work was being completed all plants, shrubs and surfaces not being painted were covered with plastic, paper and drop cloths so that the paint only goes where it is supposed to. This week Donigan Painting is completing an exterior house painting job on Shotwell Park in Syracuse's Eastwood Neighborhood. Jared and Jaime called months ago for a quote to repaint their tan colored home. The color had faded over many years and they wanted to personalize their home with their own touch. To start their aluminum siding was pressure washed to remove dirt and debris that had built up on it. After drying for a week we came back and got right into spraying the body of their house. Windows, soffit, molding was taped and masked then two coats of Sherwin-Williams Super Paint in a Benjamin Moore color, Light Salmon, were applied. Sherwin Williams Super Deck Solid in Canyon was applied to their deck and then was color matched to use as their accent color around the house.

This week Donigan Painting has been juggling interior and exterior jobs. With all the rain Syracuse has had getting things completed outdoors has been challenging for the last few months. This week we have been working in Manlius on a large front door. Steve's front entry door has seen better days and looked like it had not been stained or polyurethaned in many many years. With harder woods, like mahogany, prep work takes twice the time. So to start on this job we machine sanded the door with three courses of sand paper to remove all of the older cherry stain and lacquer that had become darkened and crackled. Once the wood was taken back down to original grain it was hit with two more course of sandpaper at 80 then 120 grit to open up all the pores. Once the sanding was completed it was thoroughly vacuumed and wiped down to remove dust. The sidelites and hardware were taped and masked in preparation for oil based stain and polyurethane in a satin finish for a low sheen on this sunside door. Sherwin-Williams Minwax Oil Based stain in Mahogany was used for this door. In between coats the surface was lightly sanded with 220 grit sandpaper to remove any snags or dust for a very smooth finish. Here is how it turned out!

This week Donigan Painting is working in Manlius. Steve and Alissa wanted to repair water damage from ice dams and leaky plumbing around their house. Their living room ceiling, skylights, foyer wall, stairway wall, and 1 of 2 bathrooms needed damaged sheetrock removed. Some areas were worse than others requiring multiple coats of joint compound to bring them flush then texturing to match the given pattern. Once the repairs where completed each area was top coated with Benjamin Moore or Sherwin Williams products to match the colors exactly with previously used paint. Their main entry door and sidelites where also sanded, cleaned, stained, and polyurethaned one shade darker than the original color. Here is how it all looked.
