This past week Donigan Painting completed an interior repaint in Syracuse's Meadowbrook Neighborhood. Alex just bought a new home and wanted to brighten up the bedrooms walls and molding with some newer trendy colors. His wife chose shades of gray for their kids bedrooms, Glass Slipper by Benjamin Moore for their master, and the same for their walk in closet in satin finish. Their window, door, and base molding was a dark green that they wanted painted white in a semi-gloss finish. This is a 1960's built home that has everything original including caked on molding. To start the transformation the molding was machine-hand sanded to remove the shiny finish, then vacuumed and wiped it all down. Two coats of high quality acrylic primer were applied with a brush using PPG's Seal-Grip Primer at Purcell's Paints Bridge St. Following priming-dry-time caulk was applied to fill gaps and nail holes were wood puttied. Priming first gives the caulk and putty something to stick to. So one coat of primer is applied then it's caulked-puttied then the second coat of primer is applied to seal both. One coat of Pittsburgh Ceiling Paint was applied to all the ceilings to radiate light to the new paint and give the ceilings a fresh look. Irregularities, nail holes, are floated with joint compound then sanded-cleaned-primed. Two coats of Sherwin-Williams Promar 200 in Benjamin Moore's Elephant Gray, Glass Slipper, Stone Hearth were applied to all the bedroom(4) walls. The molding throughout was paint with Sherwin Williams Emerald Enamel semi-gloss finish in Benjamin Moore's White Dove. Additionally 16 original flat doors were oil primed 2 x, fine sanded, cleaned then finish coated 3x for a very glass like smooth finish- no orange peel appearance.

This week Donigan Painting has had the pleasure of working on one of Fayetteville's older buildings on East Genesee St. The Palmer House, built in 1825, was restored a couple years ago and had been experiencing paint failure along the chimney sections since. Portions of the parged brick had heaved up and come loose dropping huge sections of mortar everywhere and making selling the building more difficult. Enter Donigan Painting. To start the ground was contained with plastic to catch the old paint-mortar. Once proper containment was setup I used a boom lift to remove the damaged sections. After carefully removing the mortar it was thoroughly cleaned with a wire brush, vacuumed and washed down to remove any fine sediment in the joints between the brick. One heavy coat of Sherwin-Williams Loxon Primer was applied in every nook and cranny to neutralize the alkaline residues so there was no bleed through or staining on the new paint. Once this product sets up you can't scratch it off with a hammer. Today new paint will be going on. Stay posted or drive bye to see the results.

Donigan Painting completed an interior repaint in Syracuse's Meadowbrook Neighborhood the last two weeks. Alex called for a quote in the Fall to have the interior of his new home painted. The dated dark green molding throughout and wall colors where from another time and had to go. So to start we painted all the ceilings with one coat of Pittsburgh Ceiling Paint-bright white. Next the 1960's wood doors were machine sanded to remove the finish, cleaned and primed with an oil base so the paint really sticks on there. The green window-door-base molding was cleaned,sanded, oil primed also. After everything was primed holes, gaps, dings-dents were filled with caulk, wood putty, and joint compound then sanded and cleaned. Three coats of Sherwin-Williams Emerald Enamel in bright white semi-gloss was then applied with light sanding in between for a very smooth finish. Once the molding had setup for a few days it was taped-masked to get ready to paint the walls. Two coats of Sherwin-Williams ProMar 200 were applied to the walls. After allowing the doors about a week to setup they were replaced on their hinges and new knobs were installed. Alex's 5 bedroom ranch was completed on time and slightly under budget.

Last week Donigan Painting completed an interior repaint in Manlius, NY. Jon and Bre called for an interior quote for their new home in Pompey Pines. After living there for a few years the contractor grade flat white paint was becoming a little boring for them and they wanted to ad their touch to their first floor living area. We carefully selected the light gray palate they wanted to use in each room from Sherwin-Williams. In this case we used Cashmere in a eggshell finish for all the walls. To start their living room, dining room, kitchen, den, half bath, entries furniture were centered and covered with painters plastic. Door knobs, latches, switch plates, hardware was removed for smooth lines and no brush strokes. Next the ceilings were one coated with Pittsburgh Ceiling Paint from Purcell's. This ceiling paint is a true bright white that is dead flat and in my experience covers and looks the best once it sets up. Following this the walls, molding, doors were sanded to remove their shiny finishes then wiped down to remove dust-debris. Dings-dents-holes where filled with joint compound, sanded, cleaned and primed for paint. One coat of Sherwin Williams Emerald Urethane Enamel was then applied to all the doors and molding in each room. The next day we covered the newly painted molding-doors with plastic-paper and applied two coats of Cashmere to the walls in their spec colors. To wrap this one up the furniture was reset, hardware was reinstalled and a quick clean up put this one in the books!

This week Donigan Painting completed an interior repaint on Syrause's Northside. Mike owns a rental on Pond Street that had a long term tenant of 16 years that turned the large flat into a smokers paradise of yellow-orange ceilings and a funk on the walls that came off in brown streaks while scrubbing it down. To start two coats of Kilz Oil Primer was applied to every wall and ceiling throughout to neutralize the funk. After opening every window to air the place out and allowing 24 hours for the oil primer to set up, it takes longer than latex or acrylic to dry, everything was ready to be super coated with Sherwin-Williams Master Hide in an off white and Pittsburgh Ceiling Paint dead flat white. After two coats the apartment looks good, smells less and will be show ready to rent once the new carpet is installed. Take a look at the smoke alarm on the ceiling in the second picture to get an idea of what I mean. The solution to the funk worked. You may want the funk but sometimes you don't. You may think I gotta have that funk? Well in this case you don't. You maybe thinking we're moving, we smoke, a smokers paradise is suitable for our needs-we want the funk. In that case you are correct to want the funk but with new carpet and at least one coat of paint so the walls still have a little funk.

Last week Donigan Painting completed an interior repaint in Baldwinsville, NY. Rodrigo and Joellen wanted to freshen up their home and get it ready to possible sell in the next year so they called in the pro's. The previous homeowners had a taste for brown colors and a 90's decor. Joellen chose a few shades of gray for her kitchen, living room, and two story foyer. She chose ultra-white for the doors and molding. To start we repaired her kitchens french doors framing with a few coats of joint compound to bring the jam flush. Her raised panel doors and molding were machine and hand sanded to remove the gloss finish to prepare them for new paint. You have to sand before painting molding-doors or it will scratch right off with a top coat. So after sanding the doors and molding were thoroughly cleaned with a vacuum and wiped down with a damp cloth. The doors knobs were removed and stored so there would be no brush strokes when they were painted prior to sanding. The moldings gaps were caulked and nail holes were wood putty filled then sanded. The walls in each room were pole sanded with 120 grit to smooth. Nail holes were spackled, sanded and cleaned. After the prep work was completed it was time for paint. The crown molding in each room was two coated with Sherwin-Williams Emerald Enamel Ultra-White Semi-gloss. The same product was used on the doors with 5 coats being applied with a fine nap roller for a smooth-glass like finish. Next two coats of Sherwin-Williams Promar 200 Eggshell were applied to the walls. All the door knobs and hardware was replaced, we cleaned up and reset the furniture to wrap this one up!

Last week Donigan Painting completed an interior repaint in Camillus, NY. Denise wanted to completely flip the style of her dutch colonials first floor. Her living room, sun room, dining room, kitchen, office, foyer, and stairway needed an update. She wanted to lighten up the dark old original wood molding with bright white. Her windows, base molding, door molding, railing, stringers-risers were all transformed from dark wood to bright white. To start all the molding was machine and hand sanded to remove the shiny gloss so the new paint would adhere. Next it was wiped down with mineral spirits to remove dust and clean it. Two coats of oil primer were applied followed by extensive caulking to fill seams-gaps between the walls and quarter round. Two ceiling repairs were made in the foyer and office were water had leaked that involved removing the damaged plaster and repairing it with joint compound to match the existing ceiling pattern. One coat of Pittsburgh Ceiling Paint was then applied to brighten them up. Two coats of Sherwin-Williams Promar 200 Eggshell finish were applied to all the walls in each room in various colors. To wrap her first floor up two coats of Sherwin-Williams Emerald Enamel Semi-gloss ultra white were applied to all the molding as well as the stair rail-risers-stringers. Here's how it turned out!
