Recently Donigan Painting completed an interior painting project in the Syracuse University neighborhood.  Lisa just bought a home and the interior reflects a by gone time in need of updating.  Her 1920's colonial had tons of wallpaper that needed to be removed, extensive plaster repair to the walls and ceilings, and more or less a top to bottom overhaul with new paint.  For this repaint we spent the better part of a month preparing the surfaces by removing multiple layers of wallpaper, cleaning-sanding all surfaces being painted, floating-repairing wall damage through out.  The house is about 3000 sqft which includes 5 bedrooms, 2 baths, 3 large hallways, dining room, living room, 2 offices and the kitchen.  Once we completed the prep work the ceilings were two coated using Pittsburgh Ceiling Paint.  Next we applied a coat of PPG Seal-Grip Primer to the walls.  With older homes that have plaster applying primer before paint ensures the best finish.  Following the primer we two coated the walls with Benjamin Moore Regal Select Interior in Horizon eggshell through out.  We wrapped this beauty up with two coats of BM's Impervo Satin White on all the doors, base molding, balusters, stringers-risers, window molding.

Recently Donigan Painting worked with a customer in Jamesville, NY.  John and Linda needed their decks and doors freshened up.  Their newer ranch needed some routine maintenance for the warm weather.  To start their decks were pressure washed and allowed to dry for a few days.  Their entry doors were cleaned and sanded to prepare them for paint.  The decks were stained used a hybrid solid from Purcells PPG Proluxe Solid Matte in a dark brown.  The entry doors were all two coated with a matching cream color using Benjamin Moore.  We also painted the two car garage that was unfinished.  A coat of PPG Seal-Grip Primer was applied to the walls and ceilings followed by two coats of linen white in an eggshell finish using Regal Select.  The front doors molding and frame was two coated to match the doors color dark brown.  Everything turned out great and we'll be back to paint at their home sooner than later.

Recently Donigan Painting worked with a customer in Fayetteville NY.  Marie called for an estimate to paint her home last year.  Their large colonial needed a fresh coat of white stain to brighten it up.  After accepting the bid we set the date and began work a couple of weeks ago.  Since her house is so large it took a couple of weeks to complete.  This included removing shutters, thoroughly pressure washing the house and extensive priming.  After the prep work was completed we applied two coats of Sherwin Williams Woodscapes in a solid white stain.  With older homes that have multiple layers of paint from years of painting stain vs paint is the better option becasue it will be absorbed in places paint will not reach penetrating the wood and old paint to extend the life of your repaint.  Many people do not know that there are better choices than paint like stain when your homes wood has been plied with paint over the years.  Once the body of the house was done the shutters were sprayed out black in a satin finish and rehung.  This job was wrapped up with two coats of deck stain, also Sherwin Williams, in a dark brown.

Recently Donigan Painting worked with a customer in Fayetteville.  John and Gina called to have there new  basement painted.  They added on another section to their home and finished the newer and older basement areas.  The finished sheetrock needed to be primed and two coated along with a dozen custom doors, base molding and ceiling.  They needed about 4,000 sqft painted.  Once the quote was accepted, the contract was signed, colors finalized, and a deposit was put down we set the date and got right to work.  To begin we thoroughly vacuumed and cleaned all the walls to remove dust from sanding the sheetrock.  Next we damp wiped all the walls to get any remaining dust removed.  Following this one coat of PPG's Seal Grip Acrylic Primer was applied.  The ceilings were simultaneously rolled out with Pittsburgn's Ceiling Paint.  The walls were then two coated with Benjamin Moore's Regal Select Interior with Wheat in an eggshell finish.  The doors and base molding were sprayed out using Impervo Satin White.  Once the base and door molding is installed we will return to caulk and wood putty gaps and nail holes.

Deck Staining and Prep:

Recently Donigan Painting worked on a bunch of decks in all types of conditions.  Here are a bunch of things to keep in mind if you are planning to refinish your deck this season that may help you.  First, decks are always stained not painted.  If you or a contractor plan to stain your deck make sure you or they are using stain.  Typically with newer decks, that are natural tone or not stained, you can use a transparent water protector or semi transparent stain which is oil based so you can still see the woods naturals color.  Solid color stains are typically used on older decks that are beat up or have been painted.  Solids look like paint colors and for the most part you can have them tinted to just about any color.  Any stain you use will penetrate the wood and be absorbed as opposed to forming a layer on top of the surface like paint.  If you have an older deck that has been painted and stained god knows how many times use a solid stain.  If your deck is new and has not grayed you can go with a semi transparent that has some color added.  Before you start brushing, rolling or spraying it on there make sure you thoroughly pressure was the surface.  If you have mold, mildew or it's just a dirty mess you can spray on bleach after pressure washing or try a deck cleaner.  Personally I have used deck cleaners and have not found one that works better than pressure washing or bleach.  Unless it is 90 degrees out the deck will need a couple days to dry.  To test for dryness take a little water,  a teaspoon, and pour it on a small section.  If it beads up it's still wet.  If it is absorbed your good to go.  Once you've applied two coats, industry standard, let it dry for a few days before placing furniture or a grill back on it.  You can walk on it the next day after stain has been applied. The right product and prep work will get you half way there.  Hope this helps

Last week Donigan Painting worked with a customer in Clay, NY.  Marshall called a few months ago for a quote to stain his contemporary cedar house.  Once the quote was sent and accepted we set the date for July.  A few days prior to starting the house was throughly pressure washed to remove dust, dirt, spider webs.  With the hot temps that week it dried over night and we got right to it a few days later.  Their deck had been painted a number of times and is 30 years old so special attention was paid to it during the cleaning to get it looking brand new or close.  One coat of Olympic Solid Stain in Cedar was applied to the body of the house followed by one coat of solid stain on the soffit in Oxford Brown.  The deck was two coated with a similar color to match the houses soffit to finish off this project.  Here is how it turned out below.

This week Donigan Painting worked with a real estate agent in Camillus.  Kathy called a few months ago for a quote to paint a house she is flipping on Howlett Hill Rd.  The green vinyl siding needed to be lightened up with a fresh coat of paint to get it ready to sell.  To start we pressure washed the siding and deck.  In this case someone had painted the deck instead of staining it so most of the paint was flaking off and never adhered properly.  Stain is used on pressure treated wood because it soaks into the grain vs sitting on top of the wood like paint.  After a few hours of pressure washing almost all of the paint was removed from the deck.  Once the house and deck dried one coat of Benjamin Moore Ultra-Spec Exterior in the color Natural Elements was applied in a flat sheen to the house.  Next the deck rail and balusters were stained with Cabot Solid Acrylic in Oak Brown two coats.
