Recently Donigan Painting worked with a home owner in Syracuse's Strathmore Neighborhood. I met John at a TNT meeting a few months ago and he said he needed a few rooms painted in his home sooner than later. We met and did a walk through to figure out what exactly he needed done and came up with a price that worked for him and his wife. They needed their living room , dining room, and kitchen painted. While they were out of town for a week we got it there and went right to work. Furniture was centered and covered with plastic and their newly refinished hardwoods had drop cloths placed over them. Once the walls were sanded, nail-screw holes filled with joint compound we started on the ceilings. Two coats of Pittsburgh's Ceiling Paint were applied. Next we cut in and applied two coats of Benjamin Moore Regal Select Interior in an eggshell finish with the colors they chose using their color visualizer. A quick note, if you are having trouble choosing colors go to Ben Moore's website and click on their paint a room tab. You can pick out any colors you can imagine and virtually paint any room they provide so you can get a very good idea of what it will look like. To finish things of we scuffed the base-door-window molding and applied one coat of Impervo Satin White. The results are stunning and their project was completed on time and on budget. Recently Donigan Painting worked with a home-owner in Syracuse. Rita and Jim just bought a new home and wanted to lighten up the color scheme throughout with a neutral palate. This interior painting project included their living room,dining room, kitchen, office, 3 hallways, 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, and a finished basement. We started by repainting the ceilings twice with Pittsburgh Ceiling Paint. In this case we applied two coats because the previous owners had not painted in 20 years so it was a bit drab and needed a real pick me up to get it looking great again, this did the trick. They choose Benjamin Moore's Regal Select Interior Mountain Peak White for all the walls through out each room for a uniform look. Two coats were applied, with the walls sanded in between coats for a smooth-glass like finish, using the eggshell sheen. The base, door, and window molding were painted with Impervo White satin finish as well as all the doors. Since they had not moved in yet we were able to make quick work of the space speeding up their move in date by getting done ahead of schedule. The results are fantastic and brought new life to their beautiful new home. All that is left to do was move in and decorate when we finished because we left the house absolutely spotless so there was one less thing to worry about. How to remove wallpaper- Donigan Painting Syracuse NY

A question that often pops up with homeowners is how can you easily remove wallpaper? So here is a professionals opinion on the best way to tackle it. The good news is you need very basic tools to do so and here they are: a large sponge, a 5 gallon bucket, a putty knife, ladder, and trash bag. The sponge is key so go to your local hardware store and buy a contractors sponge, I'll put a pic below. Whether it is a whole room, half a room or border around the room this should do the trick. First things first go to a popped edge-corner of the wall paper or pop an edge-corner with your finger nail or putty knife and see if you can lift up the paper and pull off the entire sheet. You may be surprised that you can with most wall papers get the entire first layer off with out anything more than your finger nail and a good long pull. It takes a little practice and it may come off in sections vs the whole thing but removing wall paper is a tedious job. Once you have torn off as much paper as you possible can to expose the pasted backing on it now it's time to get messy. Fill up your bucket with hot water and soak your sponge. Now be prepared this is going to get messy and wet so don't freak out the water will dry and you can wipe up the excess with a sponge mop or towel as you go. Take the soaked sponge and work it over a section really getting it wet from top to bottom. You want to almost push the water from the sponge into the paper backing. Work in 6x8 sections from the ceiling down. Start with one section and move to the next once you have removed all the paper backing. Here is the key. Once you have worked over one section let it sit for a few minutes then soak it again, let it sit for 3 minutes, then soak it again and let it sit for 5 minutes. Doing this will reactivate the paste so it can be removed. Starting in the area you soaked first in your 6x8 section pull up a corner of the backing and pull it off. It may not all come off with pulling so keep your putty knife handy to get the smaller stuff. Once you have removed all the backing you now need to thoroughly clean the paste residue left behind with hot water and your sponge. This may take many minutes to remove one section of residue so be prepared to get a workout. Another pro tip is throw out and pickup all the little pieces from your floor or drop clothes before it dries because once it does it's going to be a pita to get back off again. For a smooth finish before painting sand your walls with 100 grit to knock down any snags or remnants of the paper. The picks below had three layers. The above formula is what removed it all to get to the end result for this homeowner who was getting ready to sell at the time.

How do I paint a ceiling? Interior Exterior Painting Contractor House Painter Syracuse NY

Often times homeowners want to paint their ceilings to freshen them up. What looks like a simple project can turn into a daunting task of picking the right paint, having the right tools, keeping the paint just on the ceiling not your belongings, and having it look right. Here is a pro's take on doing it right with the least resistance. It takes some practice but you can do it.

1. Buy enough ceiling paint and buy the good stuff. To figure out how much paint you will need measure the area of your room. Grab a measuring tape and take the length and width measurement and multiple it. You now have your square footage and how much paint you will need. So if you have a large living room for instance that is 20 x 20 you have 400 square feet. Most ceiling paints have a coverage rate of 300-400 square feet leaning more towards 300 in my experience. Error on the side of too much and buy an extra gallon, you can always return it and it will save you a trip. Different paints apply thicker or thinner. In this case 1 gallon may cover this area but is it worth having to run back to the store? Next, buy a high quality ceiling paint. The more you spend the less time you will have to put in applying a second coat or getting less than desirable coverage from an inferior product on one coat. A gallon of the good stuff at your local paint retailer or big box is $20-$30 and will save you a huge headache with the bargain store junk that covers like water.

2. Depending on the type of ceiling you have you want to choose the right roller nap or cover. For a smooth ceiling or orange peal-light texture a 3/8's inch nap will do the trick. Spend $5-$8 and buy a good one that will not shed on your ceiling leaving behind little hairs and compromising all your hard work. If you have a heavily textured ceiling like popcorn that is very rough buy a 1/2 inch nap. This size will give you a little more ump to get the paint on there without killing yourself and damaging the ceiling. Typically with a popcorn ceiling you will need to apply more paint because they suck it up. So you may need two coats. You are also going to need a 2 inch angle sash or straight brush to cut the room in, a roller pan, extension pole, drop clothes, plastic, tape, ladder, rag, cut can, roller nap, roller cage.

3. Here is one way that works for me. To protect your belongings such as furniture and pictures remove or center the furniture in the middle of the room and cover with plastic. Take down pictures and drapes leaving the nails-hardware to hang them back up. Lay down drop cloths. If you cannot cut a straight line to save your life put tape around the room where the ceiling meets the wall. It takes a little time to do this but will save you hours of cleaning brush marks on your wall and getting a perfectly straight line. When you put the tape down make sure you seal it by running your finger across the top edge. This will give you the straight line that is sealed. Now grab your stirred or shaken paint and pour about an inch of it into your cut can and dip the brush in it getting it saturated a bunch of times. You are now ready to cut in the ceiling. Grab your ladder and go to a corner and apply paint all around the perimeter of the ceiling in a 2 inch wide span. Once you are done cutting in grab your roller and extension pole and saturate the nap. Really roll it in and out of the paint for a minute and get the paint in there. You want paint on there so get in it there good. Start on one side and roll out the length of that wall the width of your roller, this will help keep your walls clean when doing the rest. It's not a race so go slow to prevent splattering the paint everywhere on the wall. The slower the better. Extend this line of paint a few feet on each side wall for the same pattern, like the letter u. Load up the paint as soon as it runs out again and start on one side of your u shape and put it on in a v pattern back rolling over it. Repeat this across the entire room. Sometimes low light can help you see better because you can see the wet edge you just left on the last pass so turn off the lights or you can buy pink paint that turns white as it dries to help. Work in 3-4 foot rows across the room till you get to the other side. You're done. Clean up and move your furniture back. When it comes to making it look right here's a pro tip. When you are rolling if you are seeing lines all over the area you just rolled once the paint is on the ceiling gently go back over the area smoothing out the lines- back roll with each pass to create a consistent look. The key is using the empty roller from the paint you just applied, don't redip it you want a dry roller so to speak. This takes a little practice but ceiling paint is very forgiving because it is flat-sheen so practice practice practice.

Recently Donigan Painting worked with a homeowner in Manlius. Joe called us for an estimate because he is getting ready to retire and downsize his home. His realtor recommended neutralizing some of the bright colors in his home to appeal to a wide range of buyers. When we met to discuss his needs we talked about some of the trending colors that are enticing buyers in the real estate market. I recommended going with light gray for the rooms he needed painted. He agreed and we completed his painting on time and on budget with no snags. We were able to save him some money by painting what needed to be cleaned up only. This included skipping the ceilings and molding that were in great shape. Recently Donigan Painting worked with a new homeowner in Fayetteville, NY. Brian and Jen wanted to update the look of most of the rooms in their house. We met to walk through and determine the scope of their vision. They had an idea of the colors they liked and after a color consultation I gave them a price range on the spot that worked best for their budget and choices. After sending a detailed quote that included the price per room and materials that would be used they shopped a few more quotes and went with us. They said the decision was clear after our meeting that they felt most comfortable with our company based on our timeliness, professionalism and attention to details. This week Donigan Painting worked with a home owner on Onondaga Hill. Mark wanted to update his living room, kitchen, and a hallway with new paint. We met to take a look at what he wanted done and discussed the plan that would work best for him. He chose to go with our A Plan for interior painting which includes sanding the walls to smooth, filling nail holes, caulking gaps around molding and apply two coats of paint to the ceilings, walls, and molding. He chose to use Benjamin Moore products. On the ceilings we applied two coats of Pittsburgh's Ceiling Paint in flat white. Two coats of Ben Moore's Aura was applied to the walls in Wheat Grain eggshell finish. The molding and doors were painted with Impervo satin finish white. He was elated with the results and is planning to have paint the exterior this summer.
